Inside the mind of Vincent Van Gogh

In this wildly imaginative tribute, Artist Gregory Michael Maness channels the eccentric brilliance of Vincent van Gogh through a psychedelic lens of surrealism and satire. Entitled “Absinthe Minded,” the painting drips with irreverent charm and reverent homage, fusing Vincent’s tortured genius with the intoxicating haze of one of his favorite elixir—Absinthe. Created in Europe centuries ago from fermented wormwood and hypnotic herbs, a devilish doppelgänger with glowing red horns and glazed eyes pours the neon-green muse over a slotted spoon holding a sugar cube, while yellow worms and a bewitched companion looks on with star-struck delight.

Floating through the chaotic smokey gray background ether are nods to Vincent’s world—miniature replicas of his art were carefully painted of Yellow Sunflowers in Vase, Self-Portrait and Field in Arles, a floating tobacco pipe, swirling with possibility, symbols of religion, love, and madness—all spinning around the canvas like thoughts in a fevered mind. The smaller paintings seem to be melting along with a companion red paint brush and twisted clock, broken hearts of loneliness, energy field halos of temptation, and hallucinogenic details invite the viewer to step into the disoriented headspace of a misunderstood master, once dismissed as insane, now adored.
