This painting was inspired by a soul-stirring moment while walking through the hills overlooking Morro Rock at Morro Bay, California. There, in the stillness of a Eucalyptus tree grove, I was surrounded by a breathtaking spectacle while heading down a staircase to the Pacific Ocean —thousands of orange and black Monarch butterflies took to flight, their wings glowing like stained glass against the soft coastal sky. 

Flight of the Monarch Butterflies honors their incredible migration south along the California coast, a timeless journey toward the open fields of Mexico. There, milkweed plants await—sacred ground for the continuation of their life cycle, offering energy and renewal. 

Their flight is both fragile and fierce, guided by invisible threads of instinct. In this painting, I sought to capture that moment of magic when these resting butterflies awaken from resting slumber—the blue sky breaks through the coastal morning fog as the day begins. Their fluttering movement through tangled tree branches, and the quiet determination of these beautiful beings is a miracle to witness. 

May this piece stir something in your soul—a reminder that change can be both graceful and necessary, and even the smallest wings can carry us home.
